Participants in this course will review the K-12 NYS Social Emotional Standards, study Dialectical Behavior Therapy principles, and become familiar with transformative social and emotional learning (SEL), a form of SEL intended to promote equity among children, young people, and adults. With this information as a foundation, participants will examine classroom practices that foster strong, respectful relationships. Topics will include mindfulness, emotional regulation, interpersonal effectiveness, identity, stereotypes, implicit bias, microaggressions, intersectionality, student voice, and advocacy.

This course will help teachers recognize the impact of personal and group identities and biases on educational outcomes and will help them develop the capacity to lead and embrace courageous conversations in the classroom.
